Recently, a former recruiter for Google and Doordash came forward to talk about one of the best tips he could give a candidate in order to pass an interview. Nolan Church has had an illustrious and lengthy career in recruitment. He has quite literally seen everything—the good, the bad, and the ugly over the years as a recruiter.

Given Church’s extensive experience in the industry, the recruiter shared the biggest red flags during an interview and the best tip to impress the company you want to get into.

Church is currently working as the CEO of Continuum. He revealed his teachings in a conversation with CNBC. He said that the biggest red flag in an interview for him was that he was immediately put off by a candidate if he felt that they were putting on an act.

He explained, “You can clearly tell they’ve been rehearsing the same answers over and over again.” He also did not find it charming when people talked on and on without actually making a point. He noted how rambling on without making much sense might just be the downfall of a person giving an interview.

Ex-Google Recruiter Gives His Top Tip

As for his best tip, Church remembered the candidates he liked the most. These people always had one thing in common: all the interviewees that made him gleam were the people who in turn taught him something.

He says the best interviewees are people who end up teaching their interview something of note, and these are the ones who land the jobs too. Church reminisced about how once he was recruiting a chief revenue officer at an equity management platform, and one candidate stood out because he “gave me a full breakdown on how he would take our business from zero to one.”

However, Church also mentioned how this trick comes with its own burdens. The recruiter says that it is important that the interviewee not try to force this “teaching process.” It is imperative that you stay calm and mention something of importance when you can do it naturally.

He gives an example of how you can slide in your knowledge. Church says that if the recruiter has asked you a question about your experience, in this case, you can take a moment and say, “Can I tell you a quick story about what I learned in my last role?”
