Dramatic video shows Coast Guard rescuing Leo the Golden Retriever after falling off a 300-foot cliff in Oregon

The U.S. Coast Guard made a daring rescue to airlift a Golden Retriever to safety on New Year’s Day after it plunged more than 300 feet off a cliff, the second such incident in the Oregon state park in just seven months.

Leo had been jumping in front of his two owners and their other pup at Ecola State Park around 2:45 p.m. when he fell off the ledge onto the rocky shores of Cannon Beach.

The fall, at the height of the Statue of Liberty, can only be accessed by descending from a hiking trail.

Local fire departments had just installed their pulley systems when the Coast Guard helicopter arrived at the side of the cliff.

Dramatic images of the rescue. shows the 3-year-old pup curled up on the thin shore with his body pressed against the large shoreline rocks.

The injured dog makes no movement as his rescuer, who swam to shore after being lowered into the water by a USCG helicopter, slowly approaches.

The rescuer tied Leo to the basket and lifted him to the safety of the helicopter.

“Is this your first dog rescue, Jason?” The pilot was heard asking the rescuer after returning to the helicopter.

“First dog rescue,” the rescue swimmer responds.

Back on dry land, Leo was taken back to his owners, who greeted their beloved pup with a warm blanket and hugs of gratitude toward the USCG hero.

“Oh! Hugs to everyone,” a team member can be heard saying in the video.

“I love it!” answers another.

Leo was rushed to the vet with a collapsed lung, lung contusions, several lacerations and bruises, a broken canine and a broken jaw, according to a fundraiser set up by his family.

The canine spent a night in the hospital, where he underwent surgery, and will need a wire inserted into his jaw to repair the three fractures.

Otherwise, the lucky pup is in excellent condition and happy to be home with his family.

“He has the best disposition of all the dogs we have met. “Leo is Remy’s older brother and he can’t wait to feel better so he can go for a walk and play with Remy,” states the fundraiser.

This terrifying accident is the second time a canine has defied death after falling down a 300-foot drop.

In June, a German shepherd was airlifted to safety after sinking on the rocky shoreline.

The Oregon Parks Department could not immediately say whether the two cubs had been following a marked trail or had forged their own along the treacherous cliff.

Dogs must be leashed almost at all times at Ecola State Park, located about 80 miles northwest of Portland along the Oregon coast.

“Although the coast is beautiful, it is not completely safe. We would like to remind everyone to keep dogs on a leash when hiking, unless otherwise noted ‘Dogs Allowed Off Leash’ on the state park website,” warned Cannon Beach Fire Rescue, one of the four agencies who responded to Leo’s rescue on New Year’s Day.
