Elon Musk confirms launch of Twitter AI chatbot “Grok” for Premium+ users next week

Grok, the new chatbot from Elon Musk’s xAI company on the Twitter web app, Musk confirmed that Grok would launch next week for Premium+ subscribers. While Musk’s timelines aren’t always accurate, Twitter’s own code changes revealed that the Grok integration was progressing.

App researcher Nima Owji shared screenshots showing Grok added to the Twitter web app at twitter.com/i/grok. A screenshot showed non-Premium+ users being invited to upgrade to access Grok. Another showed a Grok text box to chat with the AI bot. The features were not yet public, but indicated the imminent release of Grok.

Grok, first introduced to testers on November 4, is Musk’s rival to ChatGPT and other AI chatbots. As part of the Twitter platform, it could attract users. xAI says that Grok will respond somewhat playfully and has a “rebellious streak.” He can also answer more spicy questions that other AIs avoid.

But personality will not be Grok’s only differentiation. Accessing real-time information from Twitter could make responses more interesting, although not always accurate.

Adding Grok may boost Premium+ subscriptions, helping offset Twitter’s decline in ad revenue over content concerns. Musk revamped Twitter Blue as Premium, with paid verifications and other benefits.

Then, Twitter announced Premium+ for $16 per month to remove ads and offer a Creator Hub for paid posts. Including Grok in this top tier could lead to more signups in addition to creators.

Grok’s long-awaited debut follows the chaos at OpenAI, where CEO Sam Altman was ousted but then rehired as CEO with a new board after a brief stint as a Microsoft hire alongside co-founder Greg Brockman.

Although it lacks the drama of OpenAI, Grok caught Altman’s attention. He made fun of Grok’s comedic skills by posting a clip of GPT-3 acting overly goofy like Grok. Musk responded that humor is “clearly prohibited on OpenAI” and called GPT-4 “GPT-Snore.”

Musk, an early co-founder of OpenAI, later branched out and founded xAI, staffing it with AI experts from Google DeepMind, Google Research, OpenAI, Microsoft Research and Tesla.

Grok has similar foundations to ChatGPT, but can leverage real-time Twitter knowledge and also perform web searches.
