Millennials are embracing kidulting
Kidulting has supposedly been common since the COVID-19 outbreak began. Kidulting refers to adults participating in activities that are normally reserved for youngsters.
Kidulting describes the phenomenon of older individuals immersing themselves in childhood events that formerly brought them unconditional joy. It might be seen as a reunion with the innocence and joy of bygone days, temporarily suspending the complications of the present.
Kidulting is founded on the psychology of nostalgia and the therapeutic practise of inner-child therapy, according to sources. It helps grownups relive the carefree days of their youth, boosting their creativity and attitude as a result.
During the first several months of the pandemic, the concept of kidulting gained a lot of traction.
According to Bloomberg, a 2021 poll of 2,000 US parents revealed that they had purchased toys for themselves. This sheds light on the shift in perception through which toys transcend their traditional status as children’s playthings.
“In practise, kidulting is a natural, simple return to known, feel-good childhood activities,” Carla Marie Manly, PhD, clinical psychologist and author of Joy From Fear, told Well and Good.
“The familiarity of the activity is often the perfect backdrop for unwinding.,” she continued.
The consumer market is also adjusting to this new trend
Famous brands have also adopted the essence of kidulting, catering to this newly discovered adult trend. McDonald’s introduction of adult-oriented Happy Meals equipped with collectible objects is a prime example.
Meanwhile, cultural influencers on platforms like TikTok revived early-2000s fashion trends, which resonated with a mature audience looking to relive their past.
Aside from material interests, specialised locations now enable people to relive their childhood. Dopamine Land in London and Wondr in Amsterdam encourage adults to participate in leisure activities normally designated for children.
These havens allow members to enjoy unfettered fun while temporarily escaping the commitments and complexities of adulthood. “Even if there were difficult moments in your childhood, perhaps even trauma or neglect, remembering the glimmers of happiness can spark hope in you as an adult,” clinical psychologist Trish Phillips, PsyD, says in an interview with Well and Good.
In the middle of a stressful and unsettling atmosphere, the allure of engaging in activities reminiscent of simpler times grows stronger. Kidulting provides an antidote to the complexities and stresses of modern life.
It provides a brief vacation from commitments and aims, allowing for pure amusement. According to psychologist Phillips, mindful childhood, intentionally learning, and engaging in activities one wishes one might have done as a child can create a sense of joy, tranquilly, and gradual healing through time.
