The ex-wife of progressive Arizona Rep. Ruben Gallego endorsed him to unseat incumbent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema on Monday, even though the couple split while she was pregnant in 2016.
Kate Gallego, who has been mayor of Phoenix since 2019, said in a statement released by her ex-husband’s campaign: “I know firsthand his commitment to building a better future for Arizona.”
“Our state faces real challenges that require a leader who is dedicated to fighting for working families and the most vulnerable,” added the former Kate Widland. “He will do an excellent job working for all of us as our next senator.”
Gallego’s allies have insisted that the divorce was amicable and stressed that the congressman is co-father of the couple’s son, Michael.

Presumptive Republican candidate Kari Lake had long pestered Gallego about the divorce, writing in X in October: “Ruben, you left your wife when she was nine months pregnant. Maybe you should stay out of this” after the Democrat criticized her position on abortion.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee also removed ads criticizing Gallego over the divorce.
“It appears the image rehabilitation machine has been put into action at Gallego headquarters,” NRSC spokesperson Tate Mitchell told The Post on Monday. “While we’re sure he’d love for everyone to forget him, Ruben Gallego can’t escape the fact that he abandoned his wife when she was almost nine months pregnant.”
