A retired Marine who works as a clerk at a Florida GameStop store has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after police said he shot and killed a robber who tried to steal $600 worth of Pokémon trading cards.
Derrick Guerrero, 33, was working a shift at a video game store in a suburban Fort Lauderdale shopping center Tuesday night when a thief grabbed five boxes of “ultra-premium” Pokémon Scarlet and Violet cards and ran toward the exit, Pembroke Pines police said. in a report released Wednesday.
The cards, based on the popular Japanese media franchise, sell for $120 a box.
Guerrero pulled a gun from his waistband and fired one shot, hitting the robber in the side, police said.
The victim dropped the stolen cards and ran to a waiting van, where his girlfriend called police.
He died three hours later in a hospital.
The victim’s family identified him to NBC 6 as 21-year-old Chadrick Coats.

His grandmother said Coats was a “good kid” and a sophomore at Florida Memorial University.
Police said store security cameras showed Coats never threatened Guerrero or brandished any weapons.
During Guerrerro’s initial court appearance Wednesday, his attorney said he had been honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps after 10 years of service and was working as an assistant manager at GameStop to support his wife. and his two little daughters.

Guerrero had been the victim of a robbery at his job on Sept. 11 and had purchased the gun for personal protection, police said.
