Twenty-four years ago, two PhD students came up with the idea of prototyping a full-scale search engine. His idea became Google, the world’s most used search engine. Google turns 24 today, September 27, 2022.
Google LLC is a United States-based multinational technology corporation that specializes in Internet-related services and products, such as online advertising technologies, a search engine, cloud computing, software, and hardware. Along with Amazon, Facebook, Apple, and Microsoft, it is considered one of the Big Five corporations in the American information technology industry.
Larry Page and Sergey Brin launched Google on September 4, 1998, when they were both Ph.D. students from Stanford University in California. They own approximately 14% of the company’s publicly traded shares and, through super voting shares, control 56% of shareholder voting power.
In 2004, the company went public through an initial public offering (IPO). Google was restructured as a wholly owned subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. in 2015. Alphabet’s main subsidiary, Google, serves as the holding company for the corporation’s Internet properties and interests. On October 24, 2015, Sundar Pichai was named CEO of Google, replacing Larry Page who became CEO of Alphabet. Pichai was appointed CEO of Alphabet on December 3, 2019.
Beyond Google’s primary search engine, the company’s rapid development has spanned products, acquisitions, and partnerships (Google Search). It provides services for work and productivity (Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides), email (Gmail), scheduling and time management (Google Calendar), cloud storage (Google Drive), instant messaging, and video chat ( Google Duo, Google Chat and Google Meet), language translation (Google Translate), mapping and navigation (Google Maps, Waze, Google Earth and Street View) and podcasting (Google Play Music) (Google Photos).
The Android mobile operating system, Google Chrome web browser, and Chrome OS are developed by the company (a lightweight, proprietary operating system based on the free and open source Chromium OS). From 2010 to 2015, Google partnered with major electronics manufacturers to produce its Google Nexus devices, and in 2016, it introduced a host of hardware products, including the Google Pixel series of smartphones, the Google Home smart speaker, and Google Wifi wireless mesh. router Google has also considered becoming an Internet service provider (Google Fiber and Google Fi).
