Who is the man who fell in love with his grandfather’s 103-year-old widow?
Mart Soeson, an Estonian lawyer, has been in a relationship with Elfriede Riit since 2013, but understands why some people may doubt their relationship.
Since their romance became public, some have accused Soeson of being with his other half solely to obtain a visa to reside in Australia, where Riit lives. The couple, who lived together until Elfriede was admitted to a care facility, say their 55-year age difference is irrelevant to them and that their “exclusive and committed long-term” relationship is pure love.
What are people’s concerns about this relationship?
In a statement to the Daily Mail, he said: “What started as a healthy bond I had with my late grandfather’s widow slowly but surely turned into a very meaningful and loving relationship.” He went on to say, “Yes, I’m aware of the age difference. And I understand that it’s a concern for some people.”
“But in general, age difference is a problem between an older woman and a younger man. It’s never a problem between an older man and a younger woman, but I can’t change that attitude.”
Soeson had hoped to obtain a permanent resident visa in Australia because of their relationship, but his application was denied. The couple took their case to the Sydney Administrative Appeals Tribunal.
How did this relationship start?
In a statement included in his appeal, Soeson claimed it was not love at first sight for the couple, noting that they started out as friends before developing a deeper connection.
The statement went on to say, “We had a lot in common and many reasons to spend time together given the circumstances.”
Soeson said he started spending time with Riit after his grandfather died, but then returned to Estonia. However, she told the court she missed her “immensely” and she returned to Sydney on holidays in 2000 and 2007, and then once a year from 2008 to 2013.
During their previous visit, the couple expressed their feelings for each other.
