A cheesesteak restaurant in Philadelphia has reopened its doors, now with guards with assault rifles due to the violent crimes plaguing the City of Brotherly Love.
Video from the reopening of Jim’s West Steaks & Hoagies in West Philadelphia on Sunday shows customers lining up to order sandwiches under the watchful eye of heavily armed security guards.
“Violence has increased,” co-owner Cortez Johnson told WPVI of the city that has seen a spike in murders, many of them in an area near the recently reopened food joint.
“You want people to feel safe and be protected. So when they go out and eat, they don’t have to worry about any kind of damage,” Johnson said.
Armed security guards will stand watch outside the restaurant during business hours Thursday through Sunday each week, according to WPVI.
“Our lines are at the end of the block, so while you guys are standing in line here, connecting with other people you may not know, we have security here just to keep you safe,” Saul Landers, Jim’s West CFO. , he told the media.

“If you want to protect your business and make sure everyone is safe, you need to spend that extra money,” he added.
Kevon Darden, owner of Presidential Protective Services, said those who work security at the beloved food restaurant have “military, law enforcement and law enforcement experience.”
“It’s not just me, it’s usually other officers who are sworn and certified by the state of Pennsylvania to do off-duty security work,” he told WPVI.
Some customers expressed support for heavily armed guards keeping watch.
“Safety and good food are always a plus,” Nitah Dunham told the outlet.

Mario Maiale said he is “not a big gun fan, but I get it.

But another customer, William King, said he was concerned about optics in the city, where a nearby gas station also made headlines for hiring guards armed with AR-15s.
“It’s a bit excessive. Even if you have an armed guard, it’s okay. But walking around with a machine gun is not familiar,” he added.
In 2015, the restaurant was attacked by armed robbers who made off with $215 in cash stolen from the cash register and customers, Philly Voice reported. No injuries were reported.

The business recently reopened after being closed since 2019.
Homicides are down 20% in Philadelphia since last year, which saw the second-highest homicide rate in the city’s history after 2021, according to police. However, eight of those murders took place within a 10-block radius of Jim’s West Steaks & Hoagies, statistics from the city comptroller’s office showed.
Philadelphia’s famous cheesesteak joints have sometimes been the scene of violent disputes between customers.
