House Speaker Mike Johnson Slams Biden, Adams for ‘Abdication of Duty’ After Immigrants Force New York Students to Leave School

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Wednesday criticized both the Biden administration and New York City Mayor Eric Adams after Brooklyn high school students were forced to make way for the immigrants who were taking refuge in their gym.

“This week, Secretary Mayorkas confirmed that 85% of illegal immigrants who are detained at the border are released into the interior of the United States,” Johnson told The Post in a statement.

“Now, due to the administration’s policy decisions, students and teachers are having to resort to remote learning in order to accommodate illegal immigrants in their schools. From the president to city mayors, support for illegal immigration has been declining, thus prioritizing the needs of non-citizens over the needs of our own.”

“If Biden and Mayorkas refuse to change course and secure the southern border, our students and schools will continue to pay the price for the administration’s abdication of duty,” Johnson added.

Nearly 2,000 migrants were brought to the James Madison High School gym Tuesday afternoon around 5 p.m. for fear that tents erected for them at Floyd Bennett Field would collapse due to rain and high winds.

“House Republicans have solutions: We passed the Schools, Not Shelters Act in July to ensure that schools serve as study sanctuaries, not victims of sanctuary cities,” Johnson also said. “Unfortunately, President Biden threatened to veto the bill.”

That bill, introduced by upstate Rep. Marc Molinaro (R-NY), passed the House in July 2023 on a near party-line vote, and Molinaro’s New York representative, Rep. Patrick Ryan was one of four Democrats who supported him.

Adams posted X-ray photos of the 1,900 migrants lying on the gym floor shortly after midnight, saying city officials were “doing a great job keeping asylum seekers safe and dry.” AP

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee has not yet taken up the legislation after Biden’s Office of Management and Budget issued a statement “strongly” opposing it.

“The Administration strongly opposes HR 3941, the Schools, Not Shelters Act of 2023, which would replace local control, interfering with the ability of states and municipalities to effectively govern and make decisions about their school buildings,” the statement reads.

“The bill would do this by prohibiting certain educational institutions that receive federal funds (including funds that strengthen equal access to education, assist students from low-income families, improve educational opportunities for people with disabilities, and provide access to the university) use their facilities to house noncitizens seeking asylum in the United States, as such noncitizens are permitted to do under the law.”

When asked about Wednesday’s chaos, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre dodged a question by Peter Doocy of Fox News and referred the matter to New York City officials.

Angry parents booed asylum seekers as they stepped off buses taking them to high school in Brooklyn, and one local exclaimed, “How do you feel about stealing American tax money?”

“How does it feel that tomorrow you kicked all the kids out of school? It feels good? I hope you feel well,” another mother shouted to the entourage of migrants. “I hope you sleep well tonight!”

The Big Apple has welcomed about 70,000 immigrants of the 162,000 who have arrived in the city since spring 2022.

Brooklyn Republican Assemblyman Michael Novakhov also organized a rally Wednesday morning in front of the school to protest Adams’ decision to expel students from their classrooms.

By Wednesday morning, at 4:30 a.m., all immigrants had been expelled from school (an exodus that one source described to The Post as “insanity”), but students were still required to attend classes virtually.

The strong winds subsided after 1 a.m. and “all guests returned safely” to their tent city at the abandoned airfield in Jamaica Bay, according to the city’s Office of Emergency Management.

Other migrant shelter facilities have been located on Randall’s Island in Manhattan and at the former Creedmor Psychiatric Center in Queens, but no people were moved to alternative locations due to the extreme weather.

Last month, migrants told The Post that a severe storm on Dec. 18 left them fearing for their lives inside the 2,000-bed tent facility, with 55 mph winds that loosened metal bolts and hinges. and they made them fall from the roof.
