The Republican National Committee announced Friday that Houston, Texas, would host its 2028 presidential nominating convention.
“All RNC members look forward to working with Governor Greg Abbott, Mayor Sylvester Turner, the Houston Host Committee and Houston First Corporation to follow in Milwaukee’s footsteps and deliver an incredible convention for our Party,” said the RNC chair. RNC, Ronna McDaniel, in a statement. .
Abbott said he was “proud to welcome” the Republican event after the 168-member RNC committee voted to hold the convention in America’s fourth most populous city.

The Democrats also held their nominating convention in Houston in 1928, when they nominated New York Governor Al Smith to run unsuccessfully against Republican Herbert Hoover.

The RNC chose Milwaukee to host its 2024 convention last year and hosted its first primary debate with eight presidential candidates at the Fiserv Forum on Wednesday.
