Listen to the podcast:
Plastic waste has become a common environmental problem around the world. From everyday food waste to industrially produced waste, the amount of plastic going to landfill is an issue on the radar of governments and civilians alike.
The good news is that there are some inventions that have been created with the goal of reducing plastic waste. From manufacturing plants to community-led programs, new methods and ideas are being implemented that help reduce and reuse plastics.
Production Equipment That Prevents Plastic Waste
In industrial and production factories, some common machines used to collect and convert plastic waste are:
- granulating machines
- crushers
- Equipment that performs the removal and collection of edge clippings
- PET bottle washing
- film pelletizing line
- rigid plastic washing plant
- Separation technologies
- washing systems
- drying systems
- plastic pelletizers
If you don’t know what all of these machines do specifically, the main function of each of them is the post-processing of plastic waste so that it can be efficiently reused or recycled.
Everyday inventions that avoid plastic waste
While it is of course ideal to avoid creating plastic waste altogether, there are some brilliant ideas that have been put to use where plastics are used for useful, long-term purposes.
Some of these inventions include:
- 3D printed street furniture. There are now 3D labs creating street furniture from plastic waste collected from local homes. These products offer everything from functionality to decorative effects or a little of both.
- Recycled pots. Not just pots, but everything that can be used for gardening has been created from plastic waste. Think watering cans made from washing-up liquid bottles and clamshell pots.
- Shelter hostels. Shelters have been built with the help of engineering companies to design and test shelters that are reusable. Made from recycled plastic, these shelters are easy to build and low in cost, making them a great solution for people in need of emergency and temporary housing.
- ecological bricks. Eco-bricks are really amazing. Made from plastic bottles that are filled with single-use plastics, these bricks are very strong and can be used for a multitude of purposes.
Bonus: disposable tableware. While it is true that they are not made from plastic waste, there are tableware and tableware made from green waste such as straws, fruits and vegetables. They are also made compostable.
