Israel’s U.N. ambassador Gilad Erdan dramatically held up a sign with the phone number of Hamas’s headquarters on the U.N. floor Tuesday and urged other members to call if they want a “real ceasefire.” ” in Gaza.
Erdan made this impassioned plea shortly before the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted a resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Palestinian territory and the release of all hostages.
Israel, the United States and eight other countries opposed the resolution.
“I honestly don’t know how anyone can look in the mirror and support a resolution that doesn’t condemn Hamas and doesn’t even mention Hamas by name. But you know what? I have an idea. If you want a real ceasefire, this is the right direction,” Erdan said before taking out the sign.
The poster, titled “For a ceasefire,” showed the phone number of the Hamas office in the Gaza Strip and a photograph of the group’s leader, Yahya Sinwar, whom Erdan urged listeners to ask along with the demand for peace.
“Tell Hamas to lay down its weapons, surrender and return our hostages. This will bring a complete ceasefire that will last forever,” Erdan proclaimed.

Erdan reiterated Israel’s long-standing call for its relentless bombing and invasion of Gaza, and said the nation will not stop its mission until Hamas relents.
He then emphasized that the non-binding resolution, which passed with 153 votes in favor and 10 against, would have no bearing on Israel’s intensified attacks on Gaza.
“No document, especially one adopted by a politicized and biased majority, will prevent Israel from defending itself against those who seek our destruction,” he continued.

“Israel is fighting a war for its future. “There is not a single Member State here – not a single Member State here – that would act differently in a similar situation.”
The resolution received majority approval just days after the United States vetoed a Security Council resolution demanding a humanitarian ceasefire.
Instead, the Biden administration has repeatedly called on Israel to protect Palestinian civilians, while approving an emergency sale of 14,000 rounds of ammunition to Israel.
