Israeli history professor arrested after suggesting Hamas terror attack was justified

A history and civics teacher at a school in Petah Tikva, Israel, was arrested after suggesting that Hamas was justified in the atrocities it carried out during its Oct. 7 attack, police said.

The teacher, whose name has not been publicly identified, was fired and accused of spreading propaganda on WhatsApp while claiming that Hamas was free to do everything in its power to fight Israel, The Times of Israel reported.

“An occupied nation is allowed to do whatever is necessary to succeed in its struggle,” he allegedly wrote in a group message last month with other teachers.

The instructor also appeared to defend the violations Hamas is said to have perpetrated by claiming that members of the IDF also sexually assaulted people during the decades-long conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.

“Didn’t Israeli soldiers rape Palestinian women? They have done this since 1948, and this does not appear in textbooks,” she allegedly wrote.

Police said a complaint was filed against the teacher, who was subsequently fired by the Petah Tikva municipality and the Ministry of Education.

The man appeared in court Friday, and a judge extended his custody until at least Monday as police continue to investigate the case, authorities said.

“We take seriously this case in which a history teacher who educates children in a school in Israel, distorts history, calls IDF pilots murderers, justifies the actions of the enemy and helps the enemy in times of war , among other things, with lies that include blaming IDF soldiers,” the police said in a statement, according to Israeli outlet Mako.

The teacher has also been accused of expressing anti-IDF sentiments in the past and of trying to encourage high school students to refuse to serve in Israel’s military.

He also criticized IDF pilots as “child killers” who serve in the army even if they “know well what the results will be.”

His arrest comes after Israeli police maintained a zero-tolerance policy toward inciting violence and terror since the nation launched its retaliation against the Gaza Strip over the Hamas massacre that killed at least 1,200 people in Israel on October 7.

So far, Israeli police have registered 48 indictments for this crime and are investigating 381 publications about statements made about the war.

Israeli Interior Minister Moshe Arbe has even gone so far as to propose stripping people of their citizenship if they express solidarity with terrorist groups or incite terrorism during war.
