An Israeli mother who escaped after Hamas terrorists stormed her home said her newborn baby went 27 hours without formula while they waited to be rescued.
Shaylee Atary said that when she and her 1-month-old daughter, Shayla, were saved and taken to a hospital, the newborn was so dehydrated that she didn’t produce tears when she cried.
Atary was preparing to feed Shayla early Saturday when bombs fell outside the Kfar Aza home she shared with her husband.
“I thought it was a regular bombardment we had, like every two months,” Atary told PBS. “But then we understand that it is bigger.”
The couple soon heard people shouting “Come, come” in Arabic and moments later the attackers opened their bedroom window.
“So I took my daughter, 1 month old, without shoes or phone. “My husband stayed there with a lot of people who probably want to kill him,” she recalled.
Atary ran behind the bushes, trying to stay hidden as the Hamas gunmen shot at them, and eventually found empty flower pots from which she made helmets.

While hiding in a shed, Shayla began to cry, causing Atary to run again for help.
“But then a family saved me. They were the only ones that opened. They had a camera all over the house. And they could see that I’m not one of them. [terrorists]. So they could see that I’m pregnant. They opened the house with a child. And we were in that house for 27 hours,” Atary said.
“They were bombing [for] 27 hours and they are still bombing,” he added.

Atary recalled how difficult it was to keep her young daughter calm during the horrific incident, during which she felt like she had a target on her back every time her daughter started crying.
Once they were located more than a day later, Shayla had turned a frightening white. At the hospital, doctors told her mother that she had become very dehydrated.
Now, days after the horrific raid, Atary’s husband of more than 10 years, Yahav Winner, remains missing.

Winner, an Israeli filmmaker, has a colored tattoo of a feather, brown hair and blue eyes, his wife told the outlet, adding that none of the bodies found were his.
“We had many bodies and they didn’t find it. I don’t know. Right now, I hope he gets kidnapped in Gaza. I know it’s not a great hope. But if I think about the hours that have passed since the bombing, it is too long for it to last,” Atary said. “So, I hope he was kidnapped, I hope, right?”
