Who made the call?
This statement was made by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel who shared the news at the World Fisheries Conference India 2023, a marquee event held in the vibrant city of Ahmedabad.
What did the Chief Minister say?
Patel told the media, “The Gujarat government has declared Ghol as the state fish. “This will help boost efforts to conserve and raise awareness about the fish.”
Where is the fish found?
This remarkable marine species, a resident of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, has faced challenging conditions due to increasing pollution and inflexible fishing practices. As a result, their population has sought refuge in the deep sea, making their capture a formidable challenge.
Why is it searched?
Often referred to as “sea gold” due to its notable market value, Ghol fish enjoys coveted status in various industries. Recognized for its exceptional nutritional and medicinal attributes, this species is in high demand among the pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors.
Interestingly, it also plays an important role in the production of wine and beer, demonstrating its versatility in various fields.
Virtually every facet of this extraordinary fish has valuable utility. Scientifically recognized as ‘Protonibea Diacanthus’, its various components serve integral purposes, such as the creation of threads used in the production of dissolvable surgical stitches.
Furthermore, the fish’s swim bladder is an individual asset, prized for its role in wine production in numerous regions of the world.
How expensive can it be?
In Mumbai and Gujarat, numerous fishermen are engaged in the trade of Ghol fish body parts, often striking deals with international traders at substantial prices. With shades of brown and gold, this species has an impressive size, extending to around one and a half meters in length.
Its value increases proportionally with its size, which makes the longest specimens especially exorbitant. According to certain estimates, a complete Ghol fish is known to fetch prices soaring up to Rs 5 lakh in the market.
