1983 – India won the first cricket World Cup
On this day in 1983, the Indian cricket team defied all odds and expectations and made history by clinching their first Cricket World Cup title, defeating the West Indies in the 43-run final at Lord’s.
The West Indies were heading to the final as favourites, having won the previous two world cups in 1975 and 1979. They had finished top of their group with five wins and one loss, with the loss against India.
1975 – Emergency declared in India
June 25, 1975 was the day that Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, the then President of India, announced a state of emergency across the country on the recommendation of the Indira Gandhi-led Congress government at the Center. The Emergency was in effect from June 25, 1975 to March 21, 1977 and is, to date, one of the most debated chapters in academic and political circles when it comes to modern Indian history.
