A heated altercation broke out between two kabaddi teams during an annual sports event held at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur last Saturday.
Video of the intense fight recently surfaced online, revealing how the event descended into total chaos. Viral footage shows several individuals engaging in physical altercations and even throwing chairs, illustrating the extent of the unrest.

Although the venue chosen for the fight was the esteemed engineering institute, the students involved in the fight were not from IIT Kanpur. Although it is not clear why the fight broke out in the first place, reports suggest that students from Delhi’s Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT) and JC Bose University of Science and Technology (YMCA) were involved.

In the clip, college students are seen occupying a tangled area that was probably a site for an upcoming kabaddi match. The two teams brawled and began using fists to get their points across. Somehow the flying fists weren’t enough to alleviate their frustrations, so the boys resorted to using plastic chairs to hit each other.
As chaos reigned at the scene, many students were seen enjoying the fight from the sidelines, while others fled the scene to avoid possible bruises.
What was the result of the fight?
As a result of the fight, as expected, both teams involved were disqualified from the competition. IIT Kanpur issued a statement after the fight went viral on social media. according to Racing 360, the institute said, “It has come to our attention that an incident of altercation took place between teams of two participating institutes during Udghosh ’23, the annual sports festival at IIT Kanpur. This is strictly against the spirit of the festival and is an inappropriate display of sportsmanship. “Strict measures have already been taken in this regard and the affected teams have been banned from further participation.”
The statement continued: “The institutions involved have also been intimated and advised to take appropriate measures on their part to avoid future incidents of this kind.”
