The International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated annually on May 22 to raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity, its value to ecosystems and human well-being, and the threats it faces.
1963 – India’s first Rohini glider takes off
The Department of Civil Aviation RG-1 Rohini is a 1960s Indian two-seat training glider. A high-wing, wooden monoplane, with side-by-side seats; at least 107 were built.
1936 – Foundation stone of the first stadium in India
Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai The cornerstone of Brabourne Stadium, India’s first cricket stadium, was laid on this day in Mumbai. The North Stand at Brabourne was the headquarters of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and later transferred to the newly built Cricket Center at the nearby Wankhede Stadium.
1987 – The Hashimpura massacre occurs
On 22 May 1987, 42 Muslim men were arrested in the Meerut town of Hashimpura by the UP provincial armed police for cold-blooded execution.
1992 – India launches its Agni rocket
On May 22, at exactly 7:17 am, Agni exploded in a fiery chariot, turning India into an elite club controlled by the world’s military and technical giants. Agni, India’s first intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM), has been postponed twice before launch at the Chandipur interim test range on the Orissa coast.
2010 – Air India Express Boeing 737 crashed
Air India Express Boeing 737 flight crashed on landing at Mangalore in India, killing 158 of 166 people on board.
