House Speaker Kevin McCarthy trolled President Biden and other Democrats on Tuesday over the widening gap between the White House and New York City Mayor Eric Adams on immigration.

McCarthy’s statement underscored unified Democratic opposition to the proposed Border Security Act of 2023, legislation House Republicans crafted earlier this year to restart border wall construction and bolster security.
Former Republican Vice President Mike Pence also praised Adams for defending the White House, saying on WABC 770 AM’s “Cats & Cosby Show” Monday night: “I have to give a shout out to the mayor of New York, who has been willing to criticize President Joe Biden and his administration for their utter failure to secure the southern border.”
But an Adams spokesman, Fabien Levy, tweeted in response to all the praise for his boss from very unexpected corners that Republicans helped create the immigration debacle.

Adams has repeatedly called for federal assistance to address the growing humanitarian crisis at his doorstep.
Homeless shelters in cities have been stretched as the Big Apple grapples with a massive influx of immigrants, some of whom were sent there from red states like Texas, who have been eager to make their pain felt the liberal enclaves.

Nearly 100,000 immigrants have arrived in New York City since last spring, according to City Hall data.
Privately, Adams has been known to criticize Biden for what he describes as a leadership vacuum on the border crisis, but Hizzoner has also begun to step up his criticism publicly.
In May, Biden’s re-election campaign ousted Adams from his National Advisory Board after the mayor’s repeated attacks on the administration on immigration.
But Adams has also personally irked Republicans on the issue.
“It’s the irresponsibility of the Republican Party in Washington for refusing to do real immigration reform, and it’s the irresponsibility of the White House for not addressing this problem,” Adams said in May.

Similarly, the Biden administration has traded blame with Republicans on immigration.
“The first bill I introduced was comprehensive immigration reform,” Biden said at a conference with U.S. mayors earlier this year, according to Fox News. “But because of some in Congress, they refused to consider it. They considered that it was better to campaign than to resolve.”
Like Adams, Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has called on Biden to take more aggressive steps to curb the crisis. But last week, Biden refused to meet with her during her visit to the White House.
Kevin McCarthy noted that House Republicans passed the Border Security Act of 2023 earlier this year, but Senate Democrats have yet to take any action on it.

Last month, progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) mused that “immigration is possibly the weakest issue in this administration.”
Other Democratic governors, like Maura Healey of Massachusetts, have sounded alarm bells about the crisis by declaring states of emergency.
During the last fiscal year, the US Customs and Border Protection reported a record 2.4 million border encounters.
So far, there have been at least 1.7 million migrant encounters at the border during the first nine months of this current fiscal year, which will end this month.
