Message was ‘delivered privately’ to Iran after attacks on Houthi targets, Biden says

President Biden said Saturday that the United States has “privately” sent a message to Iran about its support for the Houthis attacking commercial ships in the Red Sea.

As he headed to Camp David for the weekend, Biden was asked on Saturday what message was being sent to Iran through a pair of attacks targeting dozens of facilities in Yemen controlled by Tehran’s proxies.

“We delivered it privately and we are confident that we are well prepared,” the president responded.

On Friday, U.S. officials said the Navy destroyer USS Carney fired land-based Tomahawk missiles that hit a Houthi radar site used to target ships in the Red Sea.

The attack was described as a “follow-up action… to degrade the Houthis’ ability to attack maritime vessels, including commercial vessels,” Central Command said. wrote in X.

Friday’s attack followed a broader airstrike on Thursday led by US and British forces, which attacked more than 60 Houthi targets in 28 locations in Yemen, killing at least five and wounding six others.

The series of attacks were carried out in response to a campaign of missile and drone attacks by the Houthis against commercial vessels in the Red Sea.

Biden said on Friday that the US military’s initial strikes against Houthi targets had “already delivered the message to Iran…. “They know they shouldn’t do anything.”

The Houthis, who control most of northern Yemen, have vowed retaliation and spokesperson Nasruldeen Amer told Al Jazeera that “this new attack will have a firm, strong and effective response.”

Another Houthi spokesman, Mohammed Abdulsalam, downplayed the damage from the attacks and said they would not deter the rebels from continuing their attacks on ships crossing the Red Sea.

Iranian officials had insisted that Thursday’s attacks were “a clear violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Yemen and a violation of international law.”

The escalation of tensions in the Red Sea comes amid concerns about a growing regional conflict in the Middle East amid the war between Israel and Hamas.
