A 16-year-old Nebraska girl was arrested for allegedly slitting her newborn baby’s throat and killing him, according to police.
Officers responded to a home in Gordon last Monday after receiving a call that a girl had given birth and the baby was not breathing, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by The Scottsbluff Star Herald.
The teen’s father answered the door and told officers they were “too late,” police wrote in the document.
Police entered the home and found the girl’s mother crying while holding a baby wrapped in a blanket.
She repeatedly said the teen had hurt the baby, and later revealed that his throat had been slit through his windpipe and he had several stab wounds to his chest, the affidavit states. The Emergency Medical Service immediately attempted to render aid.
The girl’s parents told police they believed she took a boning knife from the kitchen and used it to kill their newborn, according to the affidavit.
The teenager allegedly told her mother that she had to run to the store to buy some sanitary pads due to her heavy menstrual flow. Shortly after, her mother discovered blood covering the floor and wall of the girl’s bedroom.
When the girl returned from the store about 15 minutes later, her mother confronted her and she allegedly admitted to killing the baby. The girl’s father found the baby inside a closet, according to the affidavit.

It is unclear whether the girl’s parents knew their daughter was pregnant before discovering the bloody scene.
The teen, who has not been identified because of her age, was transported to Gordon Memorial Hospital and then airlifted to Regional West Medical Center, where she underwent surgery, according to the Star Herald.
When police searched the house, they discovered clothes and towels soaked in blood. Police later returned to the home after the father found the missing knife in the girl’s closet.

The teen was arraigned on charges of first-degree murder and use of a deadly weapon Thursday in Sheridan County Court, the newspaper reported. She is being held without bail, according to court records.
He is scheduled to appear in court on November 16.
