A Long Island man opened fire during a candlelight vigil for a motorcycle crash victim, an attack that “seriously injured” two mourners and shattered one victim’s femur, prosecutors announced Friday.
Steven Reid was held without bail Friday after his attempted murder arraignment in Suffolk County Court for the Jan. 6 shooting in Bellport, where 100 people had gathered to commemorate a man who was killed. in a motorcycle accident just days earlier, according to Suffolk County. District Attorney’s Office.
Reid, 27, of Calverton, fled after the shooting and was arrested in North Carolina on September 19.
He was brought back to the Empire State on September 26 to face prosecution.
According to prosecutors, Reid got into a physical fight with a man at the vigil, pulled out a gun and shot the victim at point-blank range in the right thigh, breaking his femur, before lodging further down his shin.
The victim had to undergo emergency surgery, placing metal rods and pins in his leg, the district attorney’s office said.
Minutes after the first attack, Reid chased a fleeing crowd and opened fire on other mourners, shooting another man at point-blank range with four bullets in the back, shoulder and both legs, prosecutors claim.

He then continued the rampage, shooting two women and a 9-year-old boy as they sought shelter in a nearby home, the district attorney’s office claims.
“This defendant allegedly opened fire on an unsuspecting community that had gathered to mourn the loss of a loved one,” District Attorney Raymond Tierney said in a statement Friday. “His alleged actions seriously injured two people and endangered many others. He then fled Suffolk County to try to avoid responsibility for these alleged actions.
Reid was charged with 8 counts of attempted second degree murder, assault, attempted assault, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment.
He is due back in court on November 18.
Reid’s attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday.
