Art director Nitin Desai, aged 57, was found dead on Wednesday morning, reportedly from suicide. His lifeless body was discovered hanging at his ND Studios in Karjat. This tragic event occurred just days before his upcoming birthday on August 9, and the reasons behind his decision are yet to be known. The police are currently conducting an investigation at the studios. Nitin Desai was a renowned art director, having earned four National Awards for Best Art Direction. He was admired for creating spectacular sets in numerous films, including Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Jodha Akbar, and Lagaan. His work also extended to Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 1942: A Love Story, collaborating with esteemed directors such as Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani, and others. The sudden news of his death has shocked many, prompting an outpouring of grief and condolences on social media. People fondly remember Nitin Desai as a talented and friendly professional. Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, along with others, expressed their sorrow on Twitter, praising Nitin’s expertise and amiable nature on film sets. Nitin Desai’s expansive ND Studios in Karjat, covering 52 acres, has served as a popular location for numerous films and even hosted Salman Khan’s reality show, Bigg Boss. In addition to his work as an art director, Nitin was also involved in production and direction. He produced the film Desh Devi Maa Ashapura in 2003 and contributed to TV serials. Moreover, he directed Marathi films like Hello Jai Hind! in 2011 and Ajintha in 2012.

Notably, Desai began his film career with Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s “Parinda” in 1989 and collaborated again with the director on “1942: A Love Story” in 1994. For his exceptional work in recreating the landscapes of Himachal in Film City for “1942: A Love Story,” Desai earned well-deserved accolades. His efforts were recognized with the prestigious Filmfare award for Best Art Direction, further highlighting his remarkable contributions to the film, released in 1994.
