On January 6, 2023, an American schoolteacher, Abby Zwerner, was seriously injured when she was shot by a six-year-old student while teaching in her classroom at Rickneck Elementary School in Virginia. Reportedly, the boy had brought a 9mm long semi-automatic pistol in her backpack that belonged to her mother. Her shooting raises conversations about the ability of young shooters and her parents, which has been compared to the 2000 murder of Kayla Rolland, also committed by a six-year-old student.

In 17 months, it was the third incident of gun violence in the Newport News Public School District. Richneck Elementary School is a school with 550 students. The school was equipped with metal detectors, which were used randomly to detect students. During a routine lesson, at approximately 2 pm local time on January 6, 2023, a six-year-old student pointed a 9mm pistol at Abby, the teacher, and then shot her as she reached for the gun. The bullet first went through her hand and then lodged in her chest. Police reportedly claimed the shooting was intentional. They also said there was no scuffle or warning given before the student fired the gun. The boy’s mother legally possessed the gun that she brought to school in her backpack.
The school subsequently remained closed for the following week. The school announced that the principal, Foster Newton, left the position shortly before the school reopened on January 30. Additionally, the school’s assistant principal, Dr. Ebony, resigned before the school reopened, and the school district’s superintendent was ousted effective February 1. The school reopened with additional security measures in the form of two permanent school division security officers, two metal detectors, gates installed in open areas, and all students receiving clear backpacks.
Later, the boy who shot was arrested and remained in a health center since January 13, 2023. Due to his young age, the boy could not be identified. On January 25, the teacher’s attorney stated that they intended to sue for multiple failures by the administration to respond that the student had a weapon on the school campus. Later, the boy’s parents released an anonymous statement through their lawyer saying that he was acutely disabled. Zwerner’s attorney has sent a notice of intent to sue the school system.
