The man with the longest nose dies
Mehmet, a native of Türkiye, was widely adored for his zest for life and frequently expressed his gratitude for having a world record-setting nose.
He achieved the title of the longest nose of a living man three times: initially in 2001 at Guinness World Records: Primetime in Los Angeles, then in 2010 on the set of Lo Show dei Record in Italy, and finally in 2021.
On each occasion, his nose measured 3.46 inches (8.8 cm) from bridge to tip, equivalent to the length of a playing card. Mehmet’s loved ones bid him an emotional goodbye as he rested in his hometown of Artvin.
The record holder suffered a heart attack
Unfortunately, the record holder fell ill and suffered a heart attack just before undergoing surgery last week. Although doctors intervened, they were tragically unable to save him.
According to Mynet, Mehmet’s son Barış expressed his gratitude, saying, “I sincerely thank the people of Artvin and his fans. We are grieving. My father had a kind heart and always tried not to offend anyone. He was not only at peace with his nose, but with his whole life”.
Mehmet prided himself on his nose and his exceptional sense of smell. In 2021, he shared, “My sense of smell is unique compared to others. I can detect odors that others can’t. When I walk into my house, I can immediately identify which dish has been cooked.”
Mehmet attributed his distinctively large nose to a family trait, although the exact cause is unknown. “I have this special characteristic,” he commented.
“I love this feature. The world loves it, Guinness World Records loves it, and of course my wife loves it too! It seems to be a genetic condition. The doctors haven’t given an explanation, but my father, my uncles , and we all have it.”
However, the trait did not continue in later generations of Mehmet’s family. Despite facing ridicule about his nose during his youth, he always had a deep affection for his unique feature.
“My friends used to call me ‘Big Nose’ to tease me,” he recalled. “But when I looked in the mirror, I discovered the real me. God created me that way, and there’s nothing you can do about it. I’ve learned to live at peace with my appearance.”
Mehmet shared that his distinctive nose invariably drew attention when he walked into a room, but it never bothered him in the slightest. “I love my nose, of course… I consider myself blessed,” Mehmet declared proudly. “I am very pleased to represent Türkiye, the Black Sea or Artvin at the international level. Some people become martyrs, some become prime ministers, and some become record holders.”
May his soul rest in peace.
