Poonam studied at Carmel Covent School, Chandigarh, and graduated from Punjab University, Chandigarh Jaro Education Institute of International Business, Brussels, Belgium, and Jharkhand Rai University, Ranchi. She earned a bachelor’s degree (Political Science and Economics), a master’s degree in business administration, and a Ph.D. in May 2008.

Career
The legendary Yash Chopra noticed Poonam’s talent and cast her in the film Trishul in 1978, after winning the titles of Miss Femina India and Miss Young India in 1977 and 1978 respectively. She debuted as an actress in 1978 at the age of 16 and gained popularity and focus in the film industry after the achievement of her second film Noorie in 1979. She has appeared in several vernacular films, including Nyay Danda in Bengali, Yuddha Kaanda in kannada. and Ishtam in Telugu.
In his film career he has participated in numerous television series, programs and plays, including The Perfect Husband and The Perfect Wife. He has worked in several hit films like Kaala Patthar, Red Rose, Biwi O Biwi, Yeh Toh Kamal Hogaya, Teri Meharbaniya, Karma and many others. Dhillon participated in Bigg Boss season 3 that aired on Colors TV channel in 2009. She finished second in the show. Her big return to Indian television in a lead role was with the soap opera Ekk Nayi Pehchan on Sony Entertainment Television in 2013. She appeared in a play titled U Turn, which is the Hindi version of the Marathi play.
