Poppy Harlow grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she was born and raised. When she was 15, her father, attorney James Lee Harlow, died. Mary Louise Baird is her mother’s name. Harlow is a 2001 graduate of The Blake School, a private coeducational college preparatory school based in Minneapolis. She then earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Middle Eastern Studies from Columbia University, where she graduated with high marks, Phi Beta Kappa. Harlow’s nickname, “Poppy,” comes from a childhood nickname of hers.

After interning at CBS during college, Harlow went on to work for CBS MarketWatch and CBS Newspath as a production assistant after graduating. She later worked for the local edition of NY1 News as an anchor and reporter. Harlow joined Forbes.com Video Network in September 2007, expanding her coverage to include fashion, entertainment and business.
