The bicycle thief caught on camera last month petting a family’s golden retriever before fleeing his home with a “different” two-wheeler was recently arrested, San Diego police said.
According to authorities, an unidentified 42-year-old man was caught in the theft of a $1,300 black 3-speed Electra bicycle from a home garage around 10:40 p.m. on July 15.
During the ongoing crime, he was seen petting the home’s owner’s dog in footage that went viral earlier this month.
“PAW-SITIVE NEWS, San Diego!” the city’s police department wrote in a Facebook post Sunday. “Thanks to a valuable anonymous tip and the diligent work of Northern Division Investigations, a 42-year-old San Diego man has been arrested in connection with the theft of bicycles from the garage of [Pacific Beach] last month.”

The man showed that he was not heartless, at least towards an innocent animal, when he began petting the family dog who entered the garage just as he was about to leave with the bike, according to the footage.
The thief put the bike rack on and began rubbing the pup’s belly and praising the sweet canine.
“You’re the coolest dog I’ve ever met,” he can be heard telling the pet. “I love you too. You are sweet.”
The man then asked where the dog’s “dad” was and seemed to say that the owner shouldn’t leave the garage unlocked.
