A California school superintendent was fired just days after the district was ordered to pay a $27 million settlement to the family of a 13-year-old boy who died following an attack by bullies at his high school.
The Moreno Valley Unified School District Board of Education voted 3-2 last Tuesday to remove Dr. Martinrex Kedziora following a three-hour closed-door meeting, KTLA 5 reports.
Kedziora, who served in the district since 2017, was fired less than a week after the board agreed to pay the settlement to the family of Diego Stolz, who died after being assaulted by his classmates in 2019.
The eighth-grader’s uncles, his legal guardians, said school officials were aware of the bullying Stolz suffered but did nothing to stop it, even after being assured the problem would be resolved.
The grieving family claimed the attackers were never fairly suspended, allowing the fatal assault at Landmark High School in September 2019 to take place.

The graphic video captured the moment Stolz was attacked by one of the teens, who punched him in the face.
After the blow, Stolz could be seen taking a step back before the second student stabbed him in the back of the head, causing the 13-year-old to fall and hit his head on a pillar.
The blows left Stolz with a traumatic brain injury and he died just nine days later.
Despite pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter charges, the stalkers only served 47 days in the juvenile facility.

The incident left the community in shock, and parent Yerenia Barrera applauded Kedziora’s firing, accusing the superintendent of failing to intervene when it came to bullying issues in the district.
“He leaves everything to the teachers to do all the work and all the cleaning and all he does is just go to shows or presentations,” Barrera, who says she has tried to talk to him about the problem, told KTLA. bullying of his own son.
While some celebrated Kedziora’s departure, others claimed he had been unfairly blamed for the district’s overall failures.

“He is one of the most incredible people I have ever met,” mother Kristina Horta told the local media. “He is an advocate for public education, an advocate for parental involvement.”
The Moreno Valley Unified School District Board of Education and Kedziora could not immediately be reached for comment. The district has said it would not comment on the settlement.
The district has named an interim superintendent until a replacement for Kedziora is found.
In addition to Kedziora’s firing, Landmark High School replaced Principal Scott Walker just six weeks after Stolz’s death.
