Sen. Kevin Cramer says his son was involved in police chase and crash that killed officer

The son of U.S. Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) was arrested Wednesday in connection with a police chase of a stolen vehicle that ultimately resulted in the death of a sheriff’s deputy.

In a personal statement on his Senate website, Cramer said his son Ian, 42, “was involved in a police chase that resulted in an accident in which an officer was killed.”

The senator said his son “suffers from serious mental disorders that manifest in severe paranoia and hallucinations” and that he was with his mother, Kris, when he insisted on going to visit his brother Ike, who died in 2018.

Cramer said his wife took their son to the emergency room at Sanford Health in Bismarck, but when she got out of the car, he jumped into the driver’s seat and drove away.

“Our daughter was able to track the car through Kris’ cell phone and guide officers to it in Mercer County, North Dakota. We do not have any further details at this time, but we will work with authorities to properly inform the public,” Cramer wrote in the statement.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol reported that the Bismarck Police Department was notified of a stolen SUV driven by Ian Cramer, according to local news outlet KFYR.

He was located in Hazen, North Dakota, by the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, but when deputies approached him, he fled in the vehicle and a chase began.

During the chase, Cramer left the lane and crashed head-on into an unoccupied Mercer County sheriff’s patrol car that was parked on the side of the road with its emergency lights active, according to KFYR.

A Mercer County deputy, who has not yet been identified, was standing behind the patrol car preparing to deploy a tire deflation device in an attempt to end the chase when he was struck.

The impact of the crash was so strong that it pushed the patrol car into the officer and killed him, the outlet reported.

Cramer was taken into custody and transported to Sakakawea Medical Center in Hazen before being taken to the McLean County Detention Center in Washburn.

Senator Cramer continued his statement by saying that his family mourns the loss of the representative. He also asked for prayers for the healing of his son.

“I will take the first flight I can to be with our family while we mourn what happened. We especially grieve for the family of the hero who tried to help Ian and pray that our merciful God appears as he always does in tragedies. “We ask the public to pray for the family of the lost officer and for the colleagues who serve us every day and we are grateful for all they do for us,” the senator wrote. “We also ask God to heal Ian. We love him and he hurts us deeply.”
