Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., is calling on the Department of Homeland Security to deport foreign nationals, including people in the United States on student visas, who have expressed support for Hamas terrorist attacks against Israel.
In a letter sent Monday to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Cotton demanded that the department take immediate steps to expel foreign nationals, who the Republican lawmaker said “have no place” in the United States.
“I am writing to urge you to immediately deport any foreign national, including and especially any foreigner on a student visa, who has expressed support for Hamas and its murderous attacks against Israel. “These fifth columnists have no place in America,” Cotton wrote.
More than 4,200 people have been killed in Gaza and Israel since Hamas launched its October 7 attack on the Jewish state, prompting retaliatory actions by Israeli forces.
Thousands more have been injured and many others have been taken hostage by Hamas and raped, tortured and murdered.
“Federal law is clear that any alien who ‘endorses or advocates terrorist activities or persuades others to endorse or advocate terrorist activities or support a terrorist organization’ is inadmissible and must be deported,” he continued.

The letter comes after at least several dozen pro-Palestinian student groups at various colleges and universities across the country released statements and organized demonstrations supporting Hamas’ attack on Israel, even as many of the universities themselves condemned the acts of terrorism.
Shortly after the October 7 attack, the Harvard Palestinian Solidarity Groups issued a statement signed by some 30 student organizations that read: “We, the undersigned student organizations, hold the Israeli regime fully responsible for all the violence that is unfolding.” ”.
Chapters of Students for Justice in Palestine and other pro-Palestinian student groups at many other universities, including George Washington University, the University of Virginia, and the University of California, Berkeley, also issued similar statements on the weekend of the surprise attack by Hamas.

The Harvard Palestine Solidarity Groups statement was later removed after student organizations began withdrawing their signatures amid a bipartisan backlash and some executive directors demanded the names of the students who signed it.
“A good starting point would be to quickly remove and permanently ban from future re-entry any foreign student who signed or approvingly shared the anti-Semitic letter from the Harvard Palestine Solidarity Committee on October 7,” Cotton told Mayorkas in his letter.
Many other pro-Palestinian student groups at institutions across the United States still post their statements online and continue to participate in protests celebrating the Hamas attack.

“The terrible explosion of anti-Semitism in the United States over the past few weeks should worry anyone who shares American values,” Cotton wrote. “While American citizens may have a First Amendment right to speak with repugnant vitriol if they so choose, no foreign citizen has the right to advocate terrorism in the United States.”
