The Nashville Police Department has suspended seven detectives in connection with the unauthorized leak of school shooter Audey Hale’s writings, according to a report.
The agents were placed on administrative duty Wednesday as the agency tries to determine exactly how conservative commentator Steven Crowder obtained the explosive documents, according to the NBC affiliate in Nashville.
Department spokesman Don Aaron told the station that “seven individuals are on administrative assignment to protect the integrity of the active and ongoing investigation.”
Aaron emphasized that the move was “not at all punitive” and said the suspended detectives would not be named at this time.
Crowder said an unidentified person contacted a member of his website’s research unit claiming to be in possession of a portion of Hale’s writings.
A member of his team flew to Nashville to meet with the source, who showed him images of documents included in a text exchange with a person Crowder described as a “Nashville detective.”

Crowder said his team was able to investigate and authenticate them, paving the way for their release.
While the media and some law enforcement groups have argued that the writings should be in the public domain, the Covenant School and several relatives of the victims have opposed their release.
“I am deeply concerned for the safety and well-being of the Covenant families and all Nashvillens who are grieving,” Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell said in a statement after Crowder revealed the Hale materials. .

O’Connell said he would launch an investigation into the leak along with Nashville Police Chief John Drake.
Crowder has maintained the publication, arguing that other manifestos on mass shooters have been published in a timely manner.
“This was one that didn’t follow that narrative,” he said this week. “And a lot of people thought it was necessary for this to come out. And there are people involved with the Nashville police who also believe that things have not necessarily been transparent.”
Nashville police initially said they would release at least 20 diaries and a “memoir” belonging to Hale once their investigation concluded.

Hale, who was transgender, revealed deep anti-white animus in his writings, especially toward those he considered “privileged.”
