Shanti started his career by joining the Congress party. In 1977, he became the member of Rajya Sabha and serves as the Union Law Minister in Morarji Desai cabinet till 1979. He served as a law minster in many memorable way including introducing 44th Amendment of the Constitution of India. He started a non-governmental organisation(NGO) for the public interest litigation.

Mr. Bhushan combined with his son, Prashant Bhushan( a lawyer activist), Shanti started a campaign for Judicial Accountability and Judicial reform(CJAR). After his journey of Union minister, Shanti become the part of Bhartiya Janata Party in 1980 and stay with them for 6 years but in 1986 elections, he quit from it as the party wouldn’t listen to his advice on a petition. Bhushan was also a part of Anna Hazare movement and joined Anna Hazare in many of his rallies. In 2012, Shanti Bhushan joined the Aam Admi Party‘s formal formation on 26th November and become the first member to join it.
