Endangered fish resurfaced on Australian beach after 20 years
Spotted: a hand fish! 👀Last weekend, a runner found a critically endangered spotted handfish (Brachionichthys hirsutus) in Tasmania. Unfortunately, the fish was dead, but it is exciting evidence of the life of a population we thought was locally extinct since 2005. pic.twitter.com/UzYHVZeTcO

These unusual fish were last seen more than 20 years ago, according to the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO). However, recent findings made by Kerri Yare, an Australian, while running on a beach in Primrose Sands, Tasmania, Australia, have given cause for optimism.
The species was previously thought to be extinct in the area, but this discovery is prompting further research along the coast to find more of these creatures.
According to the woman who found it, “I’m always interested in any wildlife I see while running. It looked like a small pufferfish or toadfish, which I’ve seen a lot of, but when I looked closer, I could make out its tiny hand-shaped fins hidden underneath. of a layer of sand. It was definitely a ‘wow moment.'”
CSIRO shared the video of the creature on Twitter and wrote: “Spotted: a handfish. There are only 2,000 of these creatures left in the world
CSIRO researcher Carlie Devine shared important information and mentioned that there are only 2,000 of these animals left in the world. The spotted handfish population at Primrose Sands was thought to have disappeared until the most recent find.
A few years ago they even searched, but found nothing, leading to the belief that they had disappeared. However, this recent discovery has given them new hope and encouraged them to conduct additional searches in the area.
