Frank Laffin, 20, of New York, was adopted as a newborn by Dennis and Angela Laffin in 2002 after being discovered in a diaper bag. Vicky was separately adopted by the couple two years later, when she was abandoned in a hospital bathroom on Staten Island.

The brothers just found out they were biologically connected after completing DNA tests to learn more about their cultures, according to The Washington Post. “That was obviously a big shock, I didn’t expect my brother, who I had lived with all my life, to be my biological brother,” Vicky added.

Frank originally entered the Laffins’ lives after being discovered in a diaper bag outside a Staten Island day care center. The adoptive brothers grew up with Nick, the Laffins’ biological son, who was born in 1995.

Frank and Vicky described their childhood as warm, supportive, and enjoyable, but they did not learn about their traumatic origins until they were teenagers. Angela claimed that they were “too young” to understand what that meant.

“When they’re ready, I put a box away and we can sit down,” she informed her children. Nick found out earlier, but he kept it from his brother and sister because he didn’t want to hurt them.

Vicky and Frank claimed that while they acknowledged that they looked different from their family, they never felt different, so they didn’t ask questions until years later.

However, as Vicky and Frank grew older, they became curious about their ancestors and opted to undergo DNA testing. Her parents supported her quest to find out more about her ancestors by purchasing each of them an AncestryDNA test kit.

Frank got his findings a few days before Vicky and was surprised to learn that she had both Italian and English ancestors. However, it wasn’t until Vicky received the findings from her that the duo recognized that they were biological siblings.

Her Ancestry profile linked her to Frank, and the siblings shared between 49 and 56 percent of their DNA, according to the results. Vicky called Frank yelling the news and he thought she was playing a prank on him.

Dennis and Angela, the couple he adopted, had no idea they were adopted biological siblings. “I was like, ‘What?!'” Angela exclaimed. “No way, that can’t be; I can’t even process it.”
