The ex-wife of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “repartnered” with an Ottawa pediatric surgeon months before the country’s first couple announced their separation.
Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, who shockingly revealed in August that she was separating from the leader after 18 years of marriage, entered into a relationship with Dr. Marcos Bettolli, 48, months earlier, according to Canada’s National Post.
His ex-wife, Ana Remonda, claimed in divorce papers filed April 26 that Bettolli had “re-associated with a high-profile individual who attracts significant media attention and presents significant security considerations,” according to the media, which named the unidentified “high-profile individual” as Grégoire Trudeau.
Remonda, a stay-at-home mom, wrote in court papers that she has “no position” on her ex-husband’s new flirtation.
But she insisted that the new relationship gave rise to unspecified safety concerns “to which the children are exposed while in their father’s care” and requested a court order to ensure the privacy and protection of her two children, reports the National Post.

In response, Bettolli allegedly insisted that his ex-wife’s attitude toward their new relationship “is not in the best interest of the children” and claimed that Remonda threatened to return to his home country, Argentina, if their new relationship became public.
The couple’s divorce was finalized in January 2020 and the allegations outlined in court documents have not been confirmed.
Meanwhile, the prime minister’s office confirmed in August that he and his wife had already signed a legal agreement.
The couple gave no reason for their sudden separation at the time. It has now come to light that Grégoire had started a relationship with Dr. Marcos Bettolli, 48, months before.
“They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps have been taken regarding their decision to separate, and will continue to do so going forward,” a spokesperson for the Prime Minister said in a statement at the time.
“They remain a close-knit family and Sophie and the Prime Minister are focused on raising their children in a safe, loving and collaborative environment.”
Following their separation, Grégoire Trudeau moved out of the prime minister’s property and is staying in another house in Ottawa, while his children live in the official residence.
The location of her new home has not been revealed, but the first lady has posted videos on Instagram about mental health care and gender equality that appear to have been filmed not far from Rideau Hall, the prime minister’s official residence.

Unmarked vehicles with what appear to be plainclothes members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have also been seen inside the building, which is listed as Bettolli’s address, in recent weeks, according to the National Post.
He works at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, specializing in minimally invasive surgery and chest wall deformities in children, and teaches at the University of Ottawa’s faculty of medicine.
Bettolli studied medicine at the Catholic University of Córdoba in his native Argentina, according to his biography on the University of Ottawa website.
He then moved to Canada in 2004, before becoming the educational leader for the university’s undergraduate pediatric surgery program in 2010.
