Taking a break from work is vital for everyone, but it can sometimes cause problems. Imagine telling your coworkers about your joyful holiday plans, only to be met with sour stares and even wrath.
While employees are naturally stressed, the situation can worse when the office environment becomes poisonous and your bosses fail to understand your demands. Such circumstances can elicit feelings of sadness, pressure, and anger.
A man faced the same thing on a vacation when he was forced to check emails every day and made to feel like a “criminal.” Here’s his story.

Man made to feel like a “criminal” on his first vacation from work
First vacation since I joined the company – am treated like a criminal by u/Tiredworker27 in antiwork
In today’s world, many people use social media as a forum to discuss the difficulties they face at work. One such Reddit user’s narrative has recently garnered attention. This person described how, after eight months, their holiday plans took an awful turn.
In a post headlined “The first vacation since I joined the company – am treated like a criminal,” the employee describes how his coworkers responded when they learned he was going on holiday. They also voiced “anger, disgust, and disbelief” when the employee declined to read his work emails while on vacation.
“I need you to finish these tasks by tomorrow,” he wrote. “I’ll be on vacation for 1.5 weeks starting tomorrow. This is my first vacation in 8 months. Disgust and bewilderment on his face. They then asked me to bring my laptop and check my emails every day. I protested and told them I’d bring my laptop but only check it every 4-5 days – lol. Despite my exceedingly substantial gift, I was met with a look of rage, scorn, and incredulity, as well as the advise to check them daily. And then there are some who remind us how much work was done in the office 40 years ago before those stupid emails.”
Reddit users condemned the employers
Many other Reddit users advised the employee and even revealed their own negative working experiences in response to the article. Many people urged the guy not to give in and not to bring his laptop on vacation. Here’s what people said:
