Tinder date gone wrong: Delhi man tricked into paying top dollar for shady cafe in ‘dating scam’

Online dating scams have become a widespread and costly threat, claiming numerous victims who fall prey to the cunning tactics of scammers lurking behind digital profiles.

In a recent incident in Delhi, a man’s Tinder date took an unexpected turn, leaving him uncomfortable. What started as a seemingly ordinary hookup on the dating app took a dark turn when the woman he met took him on a date at a shady cafe.

To his surprise, he ended up paying a hefty bill of approximately Rs 15,000 for drinks and food, far below his expectations.

This incident became widely known when the man shared his frustration in a viral Reddit post within the ‘Delhi’ subreddit.

He shared, ‘Yesterday, a girl wanted to meet me at “Rajouri Garden”. I arrived, then she sent me another location 1 km away and called me to meet at a cafe-studio.’ The place looked bleak; I said, ‘Let’s go somewhere that has a good map rating.'”

However, due to his strong desire to end a two-year dating drought, the man reluctantly agreed when the woman insisted.

He added, “Another couple was sitting there, which added a bit of authenticity to my already confused sense of judgement.”

A detailed breakdown of his orders followed, which included an expensive hookah priced at 5,000 rupees and five shots of vodka, each at 800 rupees. He commented, “I barely felt like I had anything.”

However, he was initially given a bill for these items and additional charges for chips and services, in the amount of Rs 15,500, which was later reduced to Rs 14,000. This was the point she realized,

“By now, I understood what it was and could only blame it on my pathetic desperation, since all logic was screaming at me earlier. I smiled at the waiter, respectfully admitted my defeat, and didn’t make a scene.”

During this incident, he overheard a man at another table express his displeasure with the bill. It wasn’t long before they realized they had both been victims of a scam.

However, the story did not end there.

The next day, the man had another game, but this time he was cautious and checked the menu of the recommended place in advance. he added. “I saw the same prices. I told the girl that this place is a fraud and that we should go somewhere else. She got really scared and went to the bathroom. Then she came out, pretended to receive a call from her dad and I had to leave urgently.”
