A woman in the UK who was incorrectly told she had cancer for two torturous years has been awarded compensation in a horrifying example of medical misdiagnosis.
In addition to causing great mental suffering, the incorrect diagnosis led to unnecessary therapies and lifestyle adjustments. The woman’s experience is a powerful reminder of how crucial a quick and accurate medical diagnosis is.

She’s a 33-year-old theatrical makeup artist named Megan Royle.
What happened to her?
In 2019, Royle reported that a mole on her upper arm had become larger, more itchy and crusted over, prompting a dermatological evaluation at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital.
An initial biopsy led to subsequent treatment at the Royal Marsden Hospital for melanoma, a type of skin cancer. She was then directed to the cancer center at the Royal Marsden Hospital.
