Ukraine says it shot down Russian fighter jets and drones as the country officially celebrates Christmas.

Ukraine’s air force reported Monday that it shot down two Russian fighter jets overnight along with two cruise missiles and 28 Shahed-type drones.

The report said the attacks targeted Ukraine’s southern and central regions, but no casualties were immediately known.

He said 31 drones in total were launched, but no details were given of what the three that were not intercepted may have attacked.

A summary from the Ukrainian presidential office said one civilian was killed and at least four wounded in Russian strikes over the previous 24 hours.

The death occurred in the town of Chornobaivka in the Kherson region, which is partly under Russian control and suffers daily fighting.

Ukraine celebrated Christmas on Monday, the first time the country officially marked the holiday on December 25 instead of January 7, a date followed by some Orthodox countries, including Russia.

President Volodymyr Zelensky signed legislation in July to change the date of the holiday.

Ukraine is predominantly Orthodox Christian, but the faith is divided between two churches, one of which was long affiliated with the Russian Orthodox Church.

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which did not recognize the authority of the Russian Church and had been considered schismatic, received full recognition in 2018 by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, the highest authority of Orthodoxy.

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which was a branch of the Russian church, announced in 2022, after the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine, that it was breaking its ties with Moscow and considering itself autonomous.
