All five Mexican students were aged ranged between 19 and 22. Reportedly, they all were friends and students who were duct-taped, stabbed, beaten, and beheaded after meeting the Mexican drug cartel in the hope of getting employment as private security, met a contact in town and were not seen again until the video leaked on the internet. The boys who appeared in the video have been identified by their families, friends, and relatives as  Roberto Olmeda, Dante Cedillo, Uriel Galvan, Diego Lara, and Jaime Martinez. According to El Universal, the strongest hypothesis pointed to the young men contacting a call center to get a job. The call center is run by the Mexican drug cartel CJNG for the forced recruitment of people. These call centers offer attractive payout jobs with additional benefits to trick people to join the CJNG.

The Mexican state of Jalisco’s Attorney General’s Office has not yet confirmed the drug cartel responsible for the video and deaths of five students because two major drug cartels that vie for control over the La Orilla del Agua in the town of Lagos de Moreno are the Sinaloa and the CJNG cartel. But El Pais claimed that the Sinaloa cartel is responsible for the video as it ash the mark Pure MZ. The Mexican authorities located the location where the photo and video were allegedly recorded. There the authorities found four burned and decapitated bodies.
