India joined France as the country celebrated Bastille Day, the European country’s national holiday. The celebration was a historical milestone of the storming of the Bastille prison in Paris in 1789, which kicked off the French Revolution.

On this important day, the Punjab Regiment of the Indian Army joined the French soldiers and marched along the Champs Elysees. On July 14, the French were celebrating their national festival while cheering on the marching army during the Bastille Day parade in Paris when the Indian Army Punjab Regiment also joined in the cheer.
The drill contingent, consisting of three officers, four JCOs (junior officers) and 69 soldiers, left AF Jamnagar Station for Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport on 6 July. On the day of the parade, the contingent of three forces received a warm welcome from the French and marched along the Champs Elysees while playing the ‘Saare Jahan Se Achcha’ instrument in the background of the marching Indian troops.
The French Embassy in India tweeted, noting how the Punjab regiment’s valuable history includes fighting alongside French troops during WWI.

During the parade, the Punjab Regiment was led by Captain Aman Jagtap. The Indian Navy contingent was led by Major Vrat Baghel while the Indian Air Force contingent was led by Squadron Leader Sindhu Reddy.

Captain Aman Jagtap, 23rd Battalion, Punjab Regiment, Longewala, expressed his enthusiasm to join and lead the march in the parade. He said: “This is a proud and historic moment. After 107 years, we will parade in the same place where the ancestors of my Regiment did. For my troupe and I, it’s a source of pride for me… It’s not every day someone gets to parade before the PM in a foreign country. It’s a great and rare opportunity for us.”

Including the contingent from three Indian Army, Navy and Air Force services, this year’s Bastille Day Parade had around 6,300 soldiers marching in different contingents. Ranveer, an Indian Navy officer, mentioned, “Our contingent is full of anticipation and excitement. From the parade, you will get an idea of the preparations that have been carried out. We have been preparing (for the parade) for the last a month. However, all stage rehearsals are over and we are ready for today’s march.”
