A woman and her teenage son survived a small plane crash off the coast of Washington state. After the plane crashed into the water off Leighton Beach in North Fremantle, the two managed to escape and swim ashore, according to police. Just after 5 pm (WST) on Thursday, the plane crashed about 30 to 50 meters offshore before going almost completely submerged in the water, according to WA police. When they reached the beach, paramedics examined pilot Michelle Yeates, 45, and her 15-year-old son Jacob.
They survived the collision unharmed but in shock. Both were able to leave the plane and swim to land, according to a police statement. After watching the solar eclipse on Thursday from Carnarvon, the two were to catch a flight from Geraldton to Jandakot Airport. Yeates, a commercial pilot, observed that the plane’s engines were having trouble and sent out a distress call. She was forced to leave the plane in the lake a short time later.
