West Auckland police incident
A man who allegedly tried to steal cars in west Auckland while being held at gunpoint has been shot by armed police. The incident took place Wednesday afternoon, right in the middle of rush hour, prompting the closure of the Lincoln Road off-ramp and the freeway overbridge. The man’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. At around 3.19pm, police on Te Atatu Peninsula observed a suspicious car and flagged it down. They drove after the car as it headed onto the Lincoln Rd exit ramp, where the man is suspected of attempting to steal two more cars. According to Superintendent Shanan Gray, one of the cars hit the individual.
Armed police approached the man, but instead of attacking them, he ran toward the passenger side of the truck, forcing the driver to exit from the opposite side, according to Gray. At this point in the matter, the police shot the perpetrator, prompting him to surrender. After receiving first aid, the man was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds that are not believed to be life-threatening, according to Gray. In the images you can see at least four bullet holes in the front passenger side of the truck, where the man is believed to be.
Sam Leigh, a nearby witness, reported hearing gunshots after seeing armed police at the highway entrance. He saw that the police Eagle helicopter was also flying over the area. “This was an alarming incident and developed quickly for motorists making their evening commute,” Gray said. For scene inspection, Auckland’s SH16 off-ramp onto Lincoln Rd was closed. As a result, traffic is likely to be congested this afternoon. Bridie, another eyewitness, reported seeing a beat-up red car traveling northwest on the Lincoln Rd off-ramp with a bumper dragging underneath and smoke coming out. He claimed the motorist veered to the right and hit the barrier while driving.
