A Japanese tourist, Junko Shinba, was visiting Singapore on a trip recently when she decided to accompany her tour group to the famous seafood paradise in Vivocity last month. Things were going very well when the group of four sat down at a table. However, the mood changed when an Alaskan crab entered the scene.

Who was involved?

It all started with a waiter’s advice to Shinba. The waiter suggested the tourist try the king crab dish with Alaskan chili, a signature dish of the restaurant. Following the waiter’s advice, the group ordered Alaskan crab, but the mix-up caused disaster for the Japanese group.

Why did they call the police?

According to Shinba, he was told the dish was worth 30 Singapore dollars (approximately Rs 1,800). The tourist claims that she was never informed that this crab price was only applicable for 100 grams of crab, meaning that the dish cost $30 per 100 grams of crab.

Not realizing what they were getting into, the group ordered way more than they could eat and ended up with crabs weighing around 3,500 grams on their table. This meant that the bill would definitely be more than $938 (over Rs 56,000).

Shinba, 50, said AsiaOne, “We were all speechless knowing that a dinner for four adults cost so much.” She stated, “None of us were informed that the whole crab would be cooked just for us, as other restaurants serve partial crabs.”

Shinba also mentioned how they were served so much crab that “there were three plates full of crab left over.” However, a spokesperson for Seafood Paradise insists the price was “clearly communicated”. They added: “To avoid any miscommunication, the staff even brought the whole Alaskan king crab to the table before preparing it.”

Shinba was outraged after they were presented with a bill totaling $1,322 (over Rs 83,000) and called the police and the Singapore Tourism Board.

Once the police arrived, attempts to resolve the dispute began. Ultimately, the restaurant offered a $107.40 discount to the customer “out of good will,” the restaurant owners allegedly said. This left the Japanese tourist with a bill of approximately $1,215, which is equivalent to about 73,000 rupees.
