Who is JB Somers? The pop artist competing in La Voz 23

JB Somers is an American singer and songwriter. He is best known for competing on season 23 of NBC’s reality singing show “The Voice.” The show is directed by Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, Chance the Rapper and Niall Horan. He is originally from Montgomery, Alabama.

Family

Somers’ life growing up in rural Alabama was deeply rooted in the evangelical church. From being a worship leader in the youth group, singing in the choir, and attending Montgomery Academy (the same school her mother had attended), her faith was an integral part of her life.

However, in 2016, after the tragic death of his sister Somer Johnson due to a drug overdose, he decided to pursue music as a career.

Early life

Somers shared that he was drawn to a life in music singing in church. His dream solidified when he was 20 years old and he decided to pursue songwriting more seriously.

To channel inspiration, she turned to artists like Hozier, Sam Smith, Brooke Ligertwood and especially Joni Mitchell. According to Somers, Mitchell’s music prompted him to create pieces with more content and meaning.

Career

Somers released her debut single “There For Me” in April 2022 after moving to Nashville. He later comes out as a gay artist. That same month, she spoke about her experience as a queer artist in the music industry with New Scene magazine.

“It’s amazing and terrifying. I’m grateful I don’t have to hide that part of me anymore. I feel like I can now write about all aspects of my life and bring songs to more honest people than ever before. I will say that sometimes I struggle with feeling like I’m not “gay enough” for the industry. No one has made me feel this way just my own insecurities. Overall, I’m grateful to have a space to be myself and make music!”

In September 2022, he released “Build This Love” and became one of the many contestants on season 23 of The Voice.
