Rajesh Das, a previously suspended special director general of police (DGP), was found guilty and sentenced to three years in prison on Friday. Das was given a concurrent prison sentence for two different offenses by the Villupuram Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM). First, Das will be sentenced to three years in prison for violating Section 354 A(ii) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which prohibits assaulting or using criminal force against any lady for the purpose of offending her modesty. Das was sentenced to three years in prison and fined Rs 10,000 under Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. He received an additional punishment of Rs 500 for unrestraint according to the CPI.

However, the judge gave Das bail and a 30-day window to file an appeal. The Villupuram court released former Chengalpattu police officer D. Kannan with a penalty of Rs 500 after CB-CID charged him with trying to stop the IPS officer from bringing a case against Das. Rajesh Das allegedly harassed her while she was working at CM Palaniswami’s 2021 election event, according to the indictment. Another police officer who “tried to prevent her” from filing a complaint was fined Rs 500.
The IPS official accused Das of sexually assaulting her in his car when they were on guard duty at the election campaign security of then Tamil Nadu Prime Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami in a complaint she filed on March 1, 2021. She He said that at Palaniswami’s meeting on February 21, the special DGP directed him to travel in his car. According to the FIR, the senior officer reportedly held her hand and sang “for about 20 minutes” before kissing her hand. “She withdrew her hand and informed her that she was uncomfortable and that the gesture was inappropriate. She says, “He responded (give her) just five minutes and took her hand again. As a result of the stress and worry at the time, perspiration had started to accumulate on my palms. When she saw this, she offered him her towel to wipe off the sweat. The superior officer reportedly showed him a photo of her that he had taken earlier while visiting her workplace. According to the FIR, the IPS official told her that he had saved the image of her as one of her “favorites” so that he could retrieve it quickly.
She further claimed that Das took considerable measures to prevent her from reporting the crime, constantly pleading with her and even using official channels to intimidate her. The officer told the FIR that the special director general apologized when he learned that she was going to lodge a complaint with the “police chief in Chennai” the next day. She said Das allegedly called her mother-in-law to try to negotiate a “compromise and settlement” and that he promised to “fall at her feet and apologize for her actions.” The IPS officer was immediately placed on mandatory hold after the complaint was filed and eventually suspended by the state government.
