More than 1,000 kilometers from historic Ayodhya, a recently inaugurated imposing Ram Temple has become a spiritual landmark, perched on a hilltop about 1,800 feet above sea level in Odisha.

At the same time as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was performing consecration rituals at the grand Ram temple in Ayodhya, Fategarh village in Nayagarh witnessed the dedication of a 73-foot-tall shrine worshiping Lord Ram.

Local media reports indicate that the temple, which rises to 165 feet, was completed thanks to generous contributions from villagers and devotees across the state.

Starting in 2017, the temple initiative evolved into a sincere effort involving over 150 dedicated workers who worked tirelessly for seven years to bring it to fruition, Prameya reported.

Local reports suggest that the hill temple is about to emerge as a potential tourist attraction.

The genesis of this venture dates back to the ‘Nabakalebar’ event of 1912 – the ceremonial recreation of the wooden idols of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Shubhadra – during which Fategarh played a pivotal role in contributing a sacred tree for the wood used in the ritual, according to OTV reports.

In homage to this historical association and remembrance of the event, the villagers established the Shri Ram Seva Parishad committee, which led to the initiation and eventual completion of the temple.

According to OTV, the temple site has a storied past, and locals say that during times of drought, prayers were held at this very spot as a call for rain, referring to it as Giri Govardhan.

What is its structure like?

Designed in the traditional Odia architectural style, reminiscent of famous structures such as the revered Tara Tarini and Konark temples, the central shrine of the shrine rises to an impressive height of 65 feet.

Encompassing the main temple are four additional shrines dedicated to Sun God, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha and Lord Hanuman.
