Biden scolds media over economy: ‘Start reporting it the right way’

President Biden chastised the media this weekend for its coverage of the economy as he grapples with lackluster approval ratings on the issue that is top of mind for most voters heading into 2024.

“What is your outlook on the economy next year?” a reporter asked the 81-year-old on Saturday as he left the White House to spend Christmas at Camp David.

“All good,” Biden responded, adding: “Take a look. Start reporting it the right way.”

Since taking office, Biden has been dogged by voters’ poor ratings on the economy. His current approval rating on the issue stands at 37.2%, while 59.7% of Americans disapprove of his economic management, according to the latest RealClearPolitics average.

Shortly after taking office, Biden governed for decades through high inflation, supply chain problems and other economic problems.

While inflation has cooled, wages and incomes have yet to catch up with price increases, leaving the president stuck in a neutral position with the electorate.

In November, inflation was 3.1% over the previous 12 months, stubbornly above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target, but well below the June 2022 peak of 9.1%.

Biden and his allies have tried to transform political responsibility into an asset, promoting the so-called “Bidenomy” during the election campaign to a mixed reception.

Former President Donald Trump, 77, has generally earned higher ratings among the public than Biden on the economy ahead of a potential election showdown.

During his brief meeting with reporters, Biden also briefly discussed Trump’s push for presidential immunity from charges in connection with his efforts to overturn the result of the 2020 election.

Asked if “any president is absolutely immune from criminal prosecution,” Biden responded: “I can’t think of any.”

Hours later, Trump’s lawyers filed their initial brief on the matter with the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.

On Friday, the Supreme Court rejected special prosecutor Jack Smith’s request to quickly rule in the case.
